My First 100 Mile Running Week

Well technically it was my first 7 day stretch of doing a total of 100 plus miles or roughly 106 miles to be exact.  But, for the purposes of this post we’ll say it my first 100 mile running week.  I did four days where I did 7.5 mile doubles and then 3 days of straight 15 mile runs.  I was pretty sore when I first bumped up to this volume, but I feel like my body has quickly adapted.  Jumping up to this level from doing 12 miles every day for 2 and half months made it fairly easy for me to make this transition.

To make matters worth this has all been done in the dead of winter here in Michigan.  Two of the days I had to strap on my yaktrax and another day I had run through high winds and sleet.  All the days were very cold and the last day and a half I was trudging through deep snow (3/4) to a foot deep for parts of the run.  Even though this was a very tough week to do my first 100 miles it really boosted my confidence, because if I can accomplish this now in the middle of winter then I should be able to do 100 miles a week year round if I want to.

Also, this is probably as high as I’m going to take my base miles.  I will start adding in and/or replacing miles with intervals, hills and tempos.  Also, technically I’m not really doing a long run even though some people consider a straight 15 miles long.  Heck I consider a straight 15 miles long.  I would like to do a straight 20 once a week and maybe someday if I get more into the ultra-marathon scene a straight 30+ miler once a week.  Anyway that’s all I have to report for now.

Keep Running!
